It didn’t end up so good for dad that day, but in the end created a fishing drive in his son that still exists.

Jim is licensed and insured by the US Coast Guard and The State of Oregon to provide services out to 100 miles.

Ready for the 2012 South Coast Clambake Jazz Festival

One of the best known music festivals on the Oregon Coast is just a short time away. The 2012 South Coast Clambake Jazz Festival is March 9-11, 2012 in various venues in Coos Bay & North Bend.

A “clambake” is a jam session- not a food festival (though we have plenty of those coming up). That doesn’t mean that you can’t get good seafood while you are here! Click here to see a list of local restaurants to try during your visit.

The 2012 theme is “More than Just Jazz” and features Big Band, Zydeco, Blues, Gospel, Oldies, Rock & Roll and Swing sounds- and of course dancing!

Some of our most popular regional musicians will be performing including Soulpie, Gator Beat, Stompy Jones, Coup d’Bop, Peter Krebs Trio, Sister Swing, Young Bucs, Evolution Jazz Band /Youth Bands, The Stolen Sweets, Tom Rigney & Flambeau, It’s About Time, Big Band High Street Band and Big Skies Big Band.

Oregon Dunes Loop Trail

Trail is paved for the first half-mile to a viewing area and several picnic sites. From there the trail is not accessible for wheel chairs. The trail then turns and goes down to the open dunes that leads to the beach. Find out how a dunes restoration project maintains the view and access to the dunes for this popular trail. Look for signs showing where snowy plover habitat areas are located. Please respect the birds’ privacy when nesting, March 15-September 15.

Three accessible viewpoints provide opportunities for everyone to enjoy the Oregon Dunes. Recreation Pass required, sold on site or at local visitor centers.

Directions:

From Reedsport travel north on Highway 101 for 11 miles. The entrance to the Oregon Dunes Day Use is located on the west side of Highway 101.

Horsfall Campground

An OHV campground located in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in Coos County. The campground has direct OHV dune access. The most popular activities at Horsfall Campground are surf fishing and Off-Highway Vehicle use at the nearby dunes.

The adjoining day use area offers flush bathrooms, garbage containers and loading/unloading ramp. See details at Horsfall OHV Staging Area. For reservation info, please visit www.recreation.gov.

Access: From North Bend, proceed north 1.5 miles to Transpacific Lane. Turn left and proceed 1 mile, turning right across railroad tracks. Travel 100 feet turning right on Horsfall Beach Road. Proceed half-mile and turn right into the Horsfall Campground and Day Use Area.

Amenities: Potable drinking water, flush toilets, garbage containers. fire ring, picnic tables. (please note, recreation pass is required)

Horsfall Beach

Located along the Oregon National Recreation Area, Horsfall Beach is a haven for locals and visitors alike. Miles of open sand, flooded deflation plain wet lands, beach and inland dunes can be found here. Surf fishing, off highway vehicle riding, horseback riding and hiking are allowed.

Famed as running legend Steve Prefontaine’s training ground and site of the former New Carissa shipwreck in 1999. Sunset Magazine named Horsfall Beach as one of their top 10 walking beaches.

Mystery Shipwreck: George L. Olson

Winter storms are notorious for revealing shipwrecks from times past, on this beach including the George L. Olson and the Sujameca. From U.S. 101 north of North Bend, turn west on Trans Pacific Lane, and follow it 4 ½ miles to the trailhead; blm.gov/or/districts/coosbay or 541-756-0100

2011 Blackberry Arts Festival

What: Visitors come to this popular annual event seeking all things Blackberry- and we don’t mean the electronic device! We’re talking jams and jellies, baked goods, candy and wine and more! In addition to the delicous food, the festival is a host to artisans with their handmade arts and goods.
When: August 27th and 28th, 2011
Where: The festival location will be back on Central Avenue from Hwy 101 west to 5th street.

2011 Bay Area Fun Festival

What: A festival of fun for families! Live Entertainment, the famous Cruz the Coos with more than 500 vintage vehicles, the Prefontaine Memorial Run, parade and so much more! Variety of vendors, arts and crafts and lots of different kinds of food. Beer & wine garden. Most activities in downtown Coos Bay.
When: September 18 & 19, 2011

Wild Mare Horse Campground

Wild Mare Horse Campground offers 12 campsites, 50 feet in length, with tables and fireplaces. Nine sites have double horse corrals, one has four, one has three, and one has only corral. The Day Use Area provides seven parking spots, picnic tables, fireplace, drinking water and refuse receptacles. Access to both dunes and the beach is available from the campground and from Horsfall Dune and Beach Access Road.

Directions: From North Bend, proceed north 1.5 miles to Transpacific Lane. Turn left and proceed 1 mile, turning right across railroad tracks. Travel 100 feet turning right on Horsfall Beach Road. Proceed 1.5miles down Horsfall Road

Facilities at the campground include water, refuse receptacles and trailer parking. There is also an interpretive trail and Day Use Area. For reservations, visit www.recreation.gov.
