Great Gear, Luxurious boats, and proven guides produce the best adventures! Freshwater and Saltwater trips available. Jim Pex has been fishing the Oregon coast ever since his father snuck him out of bed at the age of 5 to go out in the Ocean without telling Mom. It didn’t end up so good for dad that day, but in the end created a fishing drive in his son that still exists.

Jim is licensed and insured by the US Coast Guard and The State of Oregon to provide services out to 100 miles.

On the way into North Bend/Coos Bay, there is a Myrtlewood factory on the side of the road where visitors will find gourmet treats and handcrafted artisan products unique to our region. You have probably noticed the giants signs for The Oregon Connection, one of the largest and oldest factories in Oregon. Its specialty is producing Myrtlewood products. When you visit the factory and gift shop, you just may receive a fascinating lesson in Oregon history.

What is the significance of Myrtlewood? Myrtlewood has a rich history here on the South Coast. It is a broadleaf evergreen native to Southwestern Oregon and Northwestern California. It grow prolifically in this coastal region and considered by many to be one of the world’s most beautiful woods by its dense and richly grained qualities and sculpted patterns. During the Great Depression, the town of North Bend actually used Myrtlewood coins as currency.

The company began in the early 1900s and in 2006, the Oregon Connection was purchased by Star of Hope, a non-profit organization who’s mission is provide community support services to adults with developmental disabilities. On your next Oregon Coast visit, plan to stop by and meet their friendly staff and check out the amazing products they create. You never know what you will find.

There are five access points to John Topits Park, home to the Empire Lakes trail system. The park can be accessed on Lakeshore Drive by Stillwater Drive. The Middle Empire Lake access is located on Hull Street off Newmark Avenue. The Lower Empire Lake access is located on Morrison between Taylor and Harris as well as at the south end of Crocker. Upper Empire Lake (east) also borders Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC). The college has constructed a trail system that connects to the park and is available to the public.

Setting and Attractions:

The Empire Lakes are home to a variety of fish (largemouth bass, bluegill, brown bullhead, crappie black, rainbow trout, and yellow perch), waterfowl and birds. Lower Empire Lake also includes a beach combined with a boat ramp for those who wish to fish or just enjoy paddling around these tranquil lakes. A playground is located near the Hull street entrance to the park.

Trail Description:

The trail system is located in John Topits Park centered on the natural beauty of two lakes and stabilized dunes. Along the trails are many viewing areas of the lakes with benches to sit and watch for wildlife. Trails are paved and wheelchair accessible. Several gravel and dirt trails go off from the main paved trails around the park.

As part of the Southern Oregon Coast, we’re fortunate enough to be home of a very active geocaching group, the South Coast Geocachers. They are always excited to greet fellow geocachers and throw annual events. For more information, visit their facebook page or join them on Wednesdays, 7am at Kaffe 101 in Coos Bay.
