I want to feature one of our gorgeous beaches this week- but I am having a hard time decided which one (I love them all). Which beach is your favorite?
Runners tend to love Horsfall Beach, while dog lovers (like me) love to bring their 4 legged friends to Bastendorff Beach. But everyone knows Shore Acres is one of the gems of the Oregon Coast?
With so many choices- help me decide! I want to know which beach is your favorite (and why!). Vote in my poll posted below- and/or Vote on our Facebook Page. I will write a feature on your favorite beach- and will include your comments if I can on why you love it. Make sure your favorite beach gets represented!

Each month, we like to feature a business or attraction that adds so much to our South Oregon Coast. When visiting our area, plan to visit the Egyptian Theatre in downtown Coos Bay, Oregon. The Egyptian Theatre is one of those distinguised landmark sites that is recognized by anyone strolling through downtown Coos Bay. This beautiful historic building sits in the heart of downtown on S. Broadway (Hwy 101).
The theatre was originally a 1,240 seat silent movie and vaudeville house designed by Portland architect, Lee Arden Thomas. It opened it’s doors in grand fashion in 1925 and featured a dazzling $32,000 state-of-the-art Wurlitzer Theater Organ. Thanks to the restoration efforts of the community it remains to this day the largest movie house of its kind on the Oregon Coast.
Each weekend, the theatre is open to the general public and shows classic movies (movies that are 5 years or older).
Taking in a classic movies at the Egyptian Theatre is the perfect way to spend an evening with friends, family, or on a date for very reasonable rates. You can also enjoy a summertime treat at an old fashioned movie Concession Stand featuring Hot Popcorn, Cold Soda, Ice Cream and Candy. For more movie listings, visit www.Egyptian-Theatre.com or call 541-269-8650.
The weather was so lovely this weekend it seemed like a good time to take our “kids” to their favorite beach on the Oregon Coast- Horsfall Beach. Enjoy these pictures!
We love running on the beach and this one goes on for miles and miles! If we walk just a couple hundred yards to the left, there’s never anyone around and we can chase birds and bark without disturbing anyone!– Shortie & Vegas, North Bend
The best place to park is the Horsfall Beach campground parking lot. From Hwy 101, head west on Transpacific Lane. The road will curve to the right and shortly after that you’ll turn right into the Horsfall area (Horsfall Beach Rd). Follow that road all the way to the end, it will turn into a parking lot. You’ll need a recreation pass or an Oregon Coastal Passport. The Oregon Coastal Passport is the best one as it gives you parking in many State Parks including Shore Acres and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. We buy the year long pass for $35, but you can also get five day or one day passes. You can buy the one day pass at Horsfall, or stop by a visitor center for the longer passes.
It has been almost 2 years since the loss of Charleston’s beloved 8 foot wooden icon, Charlie the Tuna. Since 1968; Charlie stood tall and proud in an orange hat and glasses as he warmly greeted visitors as they crossed over the South Slough Bridge into Charleston, Oregon. Although Charlie suffered from internal parasites (also known as termites), it was believed that Charlie still had a lot of life in him before the prank of two youths went awry in June of 2008 (see story below).

South Coast, OR – The Southern Oregon Coast Partnership received one of the industry’s highest honors at the Oregon Governor’s Conference on Tourism on Sunday evening when the Oregon Tourism Commission (dba Travel Oregon) presented them with the prestigious Oregon Tourism & Hospitality Exceptional Partnership Award.
The Southern Oregon Partnership consists of Destination Marketing Organization’s (DMO’s) from Brookings to Reedsport. The Partnership was formed last year and started out with a bang by receiving a $10,000 matching grant from Travel Oregon to assist with a multi-faceted promotional campaign. Their marketing efforts included traditional media along with a new website, facebook page, and blog postings.
According to Katherine Hoppe, director of the Coos Bay – North Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau, “This partnership was about more than just advertising, it was about propelling one another to the benefit of our entire region and about recognizing that we are stronger as whole than we are individually. We’re all extremely excited and grateful that Travel Oregon found it award worthy.”
The Partnership Award from Travel Oregon recognizes a group of Oregon tourism and hospitality industry organizations which have collaborated to create and promote a successful tourism program, promotion, or product which is more successful than any single entity could have produced alone.
Another big winner for the South Coast was Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. They were honored with the Oregon Sustainable Tourism Leadership Award. The sustainability award recognizes an individual’s outstanding leadership, stewardship, and socially responsible practices as demonstrated by a strong commitment to decreasing the environmental impact of the tourism and hospitality industry.
This is the third year in a row the Coos Bay – North Bend VCB has been honored with an award and a first for the Southern Oregon Coast Partnership. The DMO’s included in the partnership are Brookings-Harbor Chamber of Commerce, Gold Beach Promotions & Visitor Center, Port Orford & North Curry County Chamber of Commerce, Bandon Chamber of Commerce, Coos Bay – North Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau, Lakeside Chamber of Commerce and the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce.
Attention Coos Bay Visitors and Residents! We are in for a big treat this week. Beginning today, March 19, The Hawaiian Chieftain will be in Coos Bay for the next 5 days as part of its ‘Hands-on History for Youth” tour of the West Coast.
The Hawaiian Chieftain is a magnificant replica of a typical 19th century European merchant trader commonly used to carry coastal trade along the Atlantic coastal cities and towns. The hull shape and rigging are similar to those of Spanish explorer’s ships used in the expeditions of the late 18th century along the Washington, Oregon, and California coasts.
Oregon coast visitors and residents can experience a hands on nautical history lesson aboard the ship while in Coos Bay.
The Hawaiian Chieftain offers Walk-on tours and three-hour Adventure Sails. For sail times and ticket information, visit www.historicalseaport.org.
….Vicky Costa visiting from Montana! Congratulations Vicky from Montana! You are the winner of 2 Tickets to this evening’s performances at the Southcoast Clambake Jazz Festival Shows!

When you come to visit- you really must stop by Shore Acres State Park. It is an Oregon Coast gem- and the view of the ocean is absolutely majestic. You will be charmed by the landscape and gardens and peaceful surroundings. Shore Acres State Park is also a Whale Watching Spoken Here site for the week of March 20 – 27, 2010.
I came across this video posted by a You Tube member(thank you for posting this!) who captured some of the more intense waves breaking onto the rocky overlook from Shore Acres State Park earlier this year. Put this spot on your “must see” list and enjoy this peaceful moment that was captured in this video:
